Products & Care: Bronze & Aluminium (Casts Collection)

  • Honouring individuality
  • The sandcasting technique used in the manufacture of the Casts range is a venerated artisanal process. This process is embodied in the surface pitting and pour ripples found on each piece. No Casts piece will be the same, with the unique surface texture serving as a physical timestamp of the fabrication itself.
  • Finish permutation
  • The raw materials selected for Casts will also undergo an evolution in their surface character. While these products will arrive with a vivid finish; exposure to time, touch, and environment will ensure they develop their own distinctive patina. The pieces are supplied with a thin wax coating which protects the original appearance. The natural breakdown of this protective wax will accelerate changes in tonality and patination. Finish variation is to be expected.
  • Caring for Bronze
  • Bronze products will patina, particularly at points of contact, and can include a variety tonal changes. Bronze will also naturally darken and may develop verdigris depending on its environment. If there is a desire to restore the product to its original appearance, a light application of metal polish, followed by a beeswax protectant will achieve this.
  • Caring for Patinated Bronze
  • This chemically-aged finish will wear over time to expose the bronze underneath. This finish will feature lighter areas at points of contact where the bronze has been rubbed back to a golden tone. Water and chemical-based cleaners, soaps or abrasive materials will damage the finish and should not be used. We recommend cleaning with a soft lint-free cloth, followed by a beeswax protectant. As the finish is unlacquered, regular application of the wax will be necessary to maintain the original chemically patinated finish.
  • Caring for Aluminium
  • These products can be restored to their original appearance with a light application of metal polish, followed by a beeswax protectant. Consider a silver toned polish to enhance lustre.

Products & Care: Brass (Super Collection)

  • What is Bankston hardware made of?
  • All Bankston + Sans-Arc Super Collection products are made from high-quality, solid forged brass.
  • Will my products rust?
  • No, Bankston products will not rust. Brass is an alloy made up of copper, zinc, and other elements. As it does not contain iron, it does not rust. While brass does not rust, it will over time (depending on the finish) begin to patina and develop unique depths of colour. Please refer to the Finishes page to discover Bankston’s full range of finishes and their durability.
  • What are Bankston's unique finishes?
  • Bankston’s range includes unique, hand crafted finishes, which may vary from product-to-product due to the artisanal processes involved in creating them. The patina of these finishes will change with use over the life of the product, thereby adding character to the item. Other plated and powder coated finishes should maintain their original appearance.
  • Can there be variances across finishes?
  • Bankston utilises various methods to create a range of distinct finishes. Some of these finishes are processed individually by hand, creating something truly unique and special. While Bankston’s platers strive to provide consistency, variations are to be expected due to the complexity of the hand-aging process involved in producing these unique finishes.
  • How do I look after my Bankston hardware?
  • Regular cleaning with a soft damp cloth will help maintain the integrity of the finish; the product should be dried with a soft dry cloth immediately after cleaning. To maintain the appearance of lacquered products, the protective coating needs to remain intact, to do so keep the product dry and do not let your product come into contact with paint thinners or masking tape, as these may compromise the finish. Never use solvents, scourers or abrasive cleaning products on Bankston hardware.

General

  • Will Aluminium patina like the Bronze products?
  • Aluminium will not patina in the way Bronze will and is unlikely to develop a verdigris. When Aluminium is exposed to the air, it forms a protective layer through a process known as anodization. This means there will be less change to its tone over time, and it will not deepen like the Bronze.
  • Do the products come with colour matched screws and visible fixings?
  • Any visible screws or visible fixings supplied with the products are made from brass and will match the material finish selected. We recommend always pre-drilling prior to installing our products.
  • Can the Pulls be fixed back-to-back?
  • Pull 01 and Pull 02 can be affixed back-to-back.
  • Can a privacy turn be installed with Pull 03?
  • The Casts Snib can be installed for a privacy option with Pull 03 on a standard sliding door, however it cannot be installed on a cavity sliding door, as the Snib has a projection of 30mm.

How durable are the materials?

  • Bronze and Patinated Bronze
  • Bronze materials will oxidise when exposed to air, developing a patina. A Verdigris on bronze is a sign of aging. r. This outer layer protects the inner layers of the bronze object from deteriorating, retaining its strength.
  • Aluminium
  • Aluminium doesn’t rust or degrade and is highly durable.
